As of last night, there have been 15 American Idol winners and while some have gone on to have great success and others are, ya know, around (still love ya Kris Allen), on the show’s finale the first Idol winner proved once again to be the best. Kelly Clarkson blessed everyone with a performance during the American Idol series(?) finale last night and it was, of course, amazing.
To remind the kids how it’s done, Kelly performed a medley of her hits like “Miss Independent,” “Break Away,” “Since You’ve Been Gone,” “Because of You,” and “Heartbeat Song.” And that’s not even all of them because Kelly has been consistently killing it since she won in 2002. Kelly ended the medley with “A Moment Like This,” the song she performed when she was crowned the winner. Fair warning, you might shed some tears while watching this, but I’m sure your co-workers know when it comes to Kelly, it’s hard to control your emotions.
Because Kelly is expecting her secong child any day now, her performance on the finale was pre-taped. While that means we didn’t get a Kelly & Justin Guarini reunion that would have made our middle school selves unbelievably happy, we did get some A+ tweets from Kelly about the final show.
At the end of the night, Kelly enlisted her always adorable (seriously, always) daughter River Rose to give American Idol a proper goodbye.
And now we wait 16 years or so for the inevitable Idol reboot, so we can watch River and her descendants continue the Clarkson family’s singing competition legacy for ever and ever.
