Tina Fey might have just crushed our Mean Girls dreams forever. Ever since the release of the film in 2004, fans have been hoping for a sequel. Like, a real one, not that ridiculous ABC Family sham Mean Girls 2 from 2011.
In the years since the release of the original movie, rumors have been flying at the possibility, but no one’s ever confirmed it’s going to happen. While promoting the Mean Girls Broadway musical, Tina revealed that the *real* Mean Girls sequel is probably not going to happen, and why the odds are stacked against us. Basically, she said the cast is way too popular, and thus way too expensive now, due to Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert’s successes since the 2004 premiere.
“Their quotes are all too high now. They’re, like, Oscar nominees and stuff,” she told Entertainment Tonight, before praising the actresses for nailing their roles. “There were great performances in the movie. Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Lacy and Amanda, they’re great in the movie.”
But they’re not the only ones preventing part two from happening, since Amy Poehler and Lizzy Caplan have done well for themselves, as well! Amy went on to star on Parks and Recreation and Lizzy, who played Janis, starred in movies such as Now You See Me 2 and on TV shows including Masters of Sex.
Tina, who wrote the screenplay for the movie, also revealed that she’s been dealing with sequel rumors for years. “Write it up! Somebody write it up,” she joked.
While we agree that the main actresses might expect a bump in their salaries, it doesn’t hurt to ask. After all, why wouldn’t any of the Plastics want the chance to star in the sequel to the movie that basically kickstarted their successful careers. Rachel might have a solid excuse since there are reports that she’s pregnant, but it doesn’t have to be right now. We’ll be patient!
Luckily, Lindsay is on our side since she has voiced her interest in doing a second movie plenty of times! “Mean Girls 2 the movie — this is the importance. We need Rachel McAdams! We need the whole cast back!” Lindsay, who played Cady Heron, told E! News earlier this year. “I’d love to do it again. We had so much fun making it. Mark Waters is such a great director, Tina Fey is an amazing writer, Paramount [Pictures] was great to work with — we all had a blast.”
She also recently brought up the possibility on Wendy Williams Show. “Tina has really, really immersed herself into the Broadway show. I can’t wait to see it. It seems really exciting,” she said. “I would love [to see another movie] but I think they’re really focused on the Broadway show right now.”

However, Lindsay did promise she’d do the best she can to make it happen – and we are truly grateful for her persistence! “I know that Tina Fey, and Lorne Michaels and all of Paramount are very busy,” she continued. “But I will keep forcing it and pushing it on them until we do it.”
For now, we’ll have to settle for the Broadway show, but we pretty confident that fans will never give up on a Mean Girls sequel – and quite frankly, neither will we!
