If you’ve been on social media in the last 12 hours, chances are you’ve seen tons of people on your feed freaking out about comedian Tiffany Haddish and a speech she made during Wednesday night’s New York Film Critic’s Circle gala. And the second you read the speech yourself, you’re totally going to understand why Tiffany’s words brought down the house.
The bad news: the gala isn’t televised, so we won’t get to watch Tiffany take the stage to accept her award for best supporting actress. But there’s good news, too. Sites like Vanity Fair have transcribed the full 18-minute speech for those of us who weren’t in attendance to enjoy. There’s so much to love about it, from the jokes about her crush on Michael B. Jordan (SAME.) to her comments on the cocktail she was drinking at the time that made her feel like “magic,” but what really stands out is the way she speaks about her time in foster care as a child.
When you’re a little kid going through the system, you wonder, “Does anybody even know I’m alive?” To be able to be this example to so many youth—there’s so many people like me that you guys have no clue about. But they coming. Because I kicked the f*cking door open. . . Stop holding your truth; speak your truth. Be yourself. It’s the healthiest way to be. Be who you are. Speak who you are. If don’t nobody like you, f*ck it; there’s ten other people that do. There’s somebody like you, and they need to hear you.
Tiffany’s often been open about her difficult childhood, and in her speech, she even talked about how getting her role in Girls Trip almost didn’t happen because she wasn’t well known when she auditioned. But she fought her way in any way, and because of that role, Tiffany’s talent is finally catching the attention it deserves.
“I’m always going to be me. I’m never going to be perfect, I’m always going to say what I think, and I might be messed up for it, but I don’t care,” Tiffany added.
So far, it seems like a lot of people are loving Tiffany for exactly who she is — and because she kicked that door open. Hopefully, 2018 involves a lot more from her. We can’t wait to see what else she has up her sleeve.
