More than two months after Demi Lovato was rushed to the hospital for a drug overdose, her mother Dianna De La Garza has broken her silence for the first time in an interview with Newsmax TV. With Demi’s permission, she revealed the heart-wrenching details of that summer day, recalling the chilling moment she learned about Demi’s overdose over the phone.
Dianna admitted that it’s still very difficult for her to talk about the events that occurred on July 7th even now that Demi is getting healthy again. “I literally start to shake a little bit when I start to remember what happened that day,” she said, revealing she found out that something had happened when she looked at her phone and saw texts from people asking if Demi was OK.
She said her heart dropped in that moment, but it was the phone call from Demi’s assistant, Kelsey Kershner, that confirmed her daughter was in trouble and needed medical care immediately.
“She said ‘Demi overdosed,’” Dianna recalled. “I didn’t know what to say. It was something I never, ever expected to hear as a parent about any of my kids. I said, ‘Is she OK?’ And she stopped for a second and she said, ‘She’s conscious, but she’s not talking.’ I knew at that point that we were in trouble.”
Dianna and her daughters, Dallas Lovato and Madison De La Garza rushed to the hospital and were shocked to see the condition Demi was in. “We ran into the emergency room to be by her side, and she just didn’t look good, at all,” she continued. “She was in bad shape, but I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ At that point, she said back to me, ‘I love you too.’”
She went on to say that for two days following the incident, they weren’t sure if Demi was going to make it out alive. As previously reported, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer suffered complications, including extreme nausea, a high fever, and an infection. Thankfully, she recovered and Dianna said she owes her daughter’s life to the “millions of prayers that went up that day.”
Following her hospital stay, the 26-year-old checked herself into rehab where she’s been receiving treatment ever since. We haven’t had any official updates since Demi released a statement on Instagram in July, but now Dianna has offered fans some positive reassurance regarding her health.
“I can honestly say that today, she’s doing really well,” Dianna confirmed in her interview. “She’s happy, healthy, she’s working on her sobriety, and she’s getting the help she needs and that in itself encourages me about her future and about the future of our family.”
We’re so thankful and glad that she’s on the road to a full recovery!
