Remember how excited we all were when the live-action remake of The Beauty and the Beast was coming out last March? Well, it turns out that in an alternate dimension we all may have just been a little more enthused — because one of our favorite Hollywood powerhouses, who’s a singer, songwriter, pop diva, and actress almost had a part. Guess who it is yet?
Yep — that’s right — Beyoncé was almost in the Emma Watson Disney flick earlier this year after being offered the part of Plumette (formerly known as Fifi), the feather duster. After working together on Dreamgirls, Bill Condon, who was also the director of B&tB, desperately wanted the “Halo” singer to take part in the movie. Unfortunately, the part offered wasn’t big enough for the Queen, and she turned Bill down.
“I even tried to get her into Beauty and the Beast,” he told Yahoo Entertainment. “But it wasn’t a big enough part. She would have been a good feather duster.”
While we can definitely understand why Beyoncé, given her level of fame, would be aiming for film deals where she’d be killing it center stage, considering the other big-time actors who took smaller parts in B&tB, such as Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Josh Gad and Academy Award winner, Emma Thompson — she would’ve been in very good company!
The mostly-voice role ultimately went to Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who you know from the Emmy Award-winning Black Mirror episode, “San Junipero,” and she played the part of Lumière’s girlfriend to perfection.
That said, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t mildly disappointed that Beyoncé couldn’t grace us with her presence in Beauty and the Beast this year. It’s been almost FIVE years since she’s been on the big screen and back then it was still a supporting voice-acting role in the film Epic. Now that she’s raising three kids and reportedly working on her next studio album, it looks like we’ll be waiting a while longer before buying tickets to her next blockbuster.
